Maraca

Maraca

Description

“A sculpture that physically responds to its environment can no longer be considered an object.”

This quote by Cologne-born concept artist Hans Haacke is the leitmotif for Maraca, Lucas Benarroch’s first solo show for Pop;68. In this exhibition, the Spanish artist explores his own special connection with a very particular item: the maraca. All the works on display are studies related to this object — some focus on the instrument’s shape, others on its sound, and others explore the way it moves when it is shaken. The artist uses a variety of media, ranging from raw materials to video works and even installations with cutting-edge sensors that make maracas shake as viewers approach them.
